Video Gaming News: Monday Newz

Hello, all you amazing people out in the world reading this article. Welcome to another installment of Video Gaming News, our Monday Newz segment. I hope you enjoyed your weekend and got some beach time, BBQs, or some festivals in. With the news for this week, I am going to start off with a very sad incident that happened very recently involving a shooting in Florida. It pains me to write about it because of how tragic it really is. If anyone who has been impacted by this incident is reading this, please know that the A4GZ team and my thoughts go out to you and of course the friends and families who have been impacted.

A Terror In FL

We have seen tragedies strike for a lot of our favorite forms of media. Concerts, movie theaters, plays, and now Gaming Tournaments. This past Sunday in Jacksonville Fl there was a Video Game tournament being held at a restaurant called Chicago Pizza. The tournament that was going on was with the new Madden 19 which is EA’s (Electronic Arts) recent entry into their Madden football game franchise. The tournament was being live streamed by Twitch which has been owned by Amazon since 2014. On the stream, shots could be heard but the shooting took place off camera.

I don’t have a link to the video because of how gruesome the audio could be to some if you find that you are interested in the video you may be able to find it with a quick Google search. Not only is this terrible news for the Esports community but in general this is a deplorable act of cowardness from someone who was reportedly a gamer who played at the restaurant and lost. The act was carried out by a 24-year-old man by the name of David Katz who was from Baltimore. EA lists a David Katz as a 2017 championship winner. It could be the same Katz but nothing is certain at this time. After Katz shot at everyone else he turned the gun and killed himself. Katz left 2 dead and 9 others wounded, thankfully the 9 wounded were all in stable conditions Sunday evening after getting sent to hospitals. The FBI advised that agents did go to Katz’s father’s house in Baltimore but cannot release any information at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

This is incredibly heartbreaking and I cannot say this enough that my thoughts are with those who have been impacted by this senseless act of insanity.

Smashing Summer Numbers

I’ve talked about this little company a lot in my articles. They started off as the saviors of gaming back in the 80s and slightly faded in obscurity within the turn of the century. I am going to be talking about non-other than Nintendo. Why? Because they have been killing it in terms of competition for video game sales. A couple of years ago if you asked if Nintendo would have a resurgence in popularity amongst gamers who aren’t mostly children, you might have gotten laughed at. Mario Tennis Aces turned out to be the best selling game this past June and then the following month in July Nintendo released Octopath Traveler. Octopath Traveler was one of the most anticipated titles gamers had on their list and it is no wonder that it too was at the top of the charts for the month of July. Nintendo not only dominated with Octopath Traveler for the month of July but they held 5 of the 10 top spots that also include The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario Odyssey.

Nintendo can no doubt attribute their Renaissance to the Switch that launched last year. They had seen an increase in hardware sales by about 21%, a rise in software sales by about 5%, and physical game cards and accessories have increased by about 33%. As of June 30, Nintendo had submitted it’s quarterly earnings report and it states that 19.67 million Switch units were sold. With Nintendo consistently topping the charts that begs the question, what’s Nintendos next big idea?

A Game That Plays On Fear

I don’t know about most of you but I love October and Halloween. The whole month just has a creepy vibe to it and it’s the one time out of the year where a lot of people deliberately scare themselves just for fun. For those that like the creepy and scare factor ramped to 11, how would you feel if I told you there was a game that fed off your fear and amplified the terror based on an increased heart rate? For those of you who have heart problems, you might not want to try this one. There is a Canadien game development studio called Red Meat Games and they have brought an experience like non-other. The game is called Bring to Light and it uses Biometrics to track the player’s heartbeat. If the game sees that your horror experience could be heightened by more fear the games system will then increase the fear by introducing new scares.

The game sounds simple in its execution but the fact that it also incorporates biometrics is amazing. The premise of the game is the player is dropped into a subway system filled with unknown creatures around every corner. To up the creepy factor, you can hear a heartbeat during your game session as well if you’re wearing the heart rate monitor. The kicker is that heartbeat you hear is actually your own. I just got┬áchills up my spine thinking about that. To escape this subway system from Hell, players need to use light to solve puzzles and evade those creatures that can sense their fear. With all of these things you get to do and experience you might be asking yourself, “what console is this for?”. It’s for non-other than the oculus rift of course and to answer another question of yours the game has dropped already back in July! For all the horror enthusiasts out there, go out and pick up that game and have a blast!

I've been gaming since the first Nintendo came out. I believe that video games are an art form that should be celebrated and I am looking to spread my passion and love of gaming all over the world. Why be boring and live only one life, when you can live many?
